Rediscovering the Instrument in the Closet
Tips for finding joy in playing again after many years away
Maybe your guitar has been gathering dust in the corner. The drumsticks are buried in a drawer, or the keyboard has been boxed up in the attic. Life happens – with work, family, and responsibilities – and music quietly slipped out of your daily routine. But the desire rarely disappears completely. One day, you feel the pull to pick up your instrument again.
Rediscovering music can be a wonderful experience. Here are a few simple tips to help you find the joy of playing again:
1. Start small
You don’t need to practice like you did in your twenties. Begin with short sessions – even just 10 minutes a day – and enjoy hearing the notes come alive again.
2. Play what you love
It’s easy to get stuck on scales and exercises, but motivation grows when you play the songs and styles you truly enjoy.
3. Set realistic goals
Instead of dreaming about the big stage, start simple: learn three of your favorite songs, or set a goal of being able to jam with a friend.
4. Find the community
Music is often more rewarding when shared. Playing with others can spark your motivation – and you’ll quickly discover many people are also returning to music after years away.
