Streaming, Vinyl – and the AI Dilemma: Danish Music Market Grew in 2024, But Challenges Lie Ahead

2024 was a strong year for the Danish music industry. According to new figures from IFPI Denmark, the recorded music market grew by 9.5% compared to the previous year – driven by a rise in both streaming revenue and the continued popularity of vinyl.

Streaming Still Dominates – But Vinyl Is Holding Its Own

In 2024, Danish record labels and artists received DKK 712 million from streaming, up from DKK 646 million in 2023. Streaming now accounts for 89.4% of total music revenue. At the same time, vinyl sales increased by DKK 12 million, reaching a total of DKK 69 million and accounting for 8.7% of the market.

In total, Danish consumers spent DKK 797 million on music in 2024, up from DKK 728 million in 2023.

Danish Music Remains Strong

Despite global competition and the international dominance on streaming platforms, Danish artists generated 34.1% of total market revenue, proving that local music continues to resonate strongly with listeners.

AI and the Fight for Music Rights

While the financial figures are encouraging, IFPI chairman and Universal Music director Casper Bengtson warns of a growing threat: the unregulated use of music by AI services.

“AI systems are using our music without permission or compensation,” he says. “Without clear and modern legislation, this technology – which also holds great promise – could become one of the largest cases of intellectual theft in history.”

What Does This Mean for Artists?

The numbers show a thriving market, but the risk is real. Without strong legal frameworks, investment in new music may decline, and the people who create the music we love could suffer.

At Beatnickel, we believe in a future where technology and music can evolve together – but only if creators' rights are protected, and the value of music is respected.
