From YouTube to the rehearsal room – but where are the mentors?

Today, many young musicians start their journey alone in front of a screen. YouTube, TikTok, and online tutorials provide access to nearly everything – but it’s a journey without a compass. Because while technique can be learned online, experience, feedback, and musical friendships can’t be downloaded.

Many of us who have been playing for years were shaped by someone who took us under their wing. A teacher, an older bandmate, a sound tech, a passionate mentor at the local music school. Someone who said: “Come join us – rehearsal is Tuesday, bring your bass.”

But where are those people now? And how do young musicians find them?

As music culture becomes more digital and fragmented, something essential is getting lost: community. Jam sessions, youth centers, and local venues still exist – but many young musicians don’t know how to find them. And many are too unsure to ask.
