Young Musicians – How to Land Your First Local Gig
Dreaming of your first real concert?
Standing on stage in front of friends, family – and maybe even total strangers – is one of the most exciting moments for a young musician. But how do you actually book your first gig when you don’t have industry connections? Here’s a practical guide to help high school bands and student musicians get started in their own city.
1. Find the right venue
Start small and local. Look for:
- Your school’s common area
- Local youth or cultural centers
- Small cafes or bars with live music
- Libraries or music cafés
- After-school clubs or rehearsal spaces
A cozy venue with 30–50 people can be the perfect first step.
2. Reach out yourself – and be ready with your pitch
When you contact a venue, keep it short and clear:
- Who are you?
- What kind of music do you play?
- How many are in the band?
- How long can you perform?
- Do you have your own equipment or need support?
Send a short email or DM and show that you’re serious. If you have demos or clips from rehearsals, include them – it doesn’t have to be studio quality.
3. Join forces with other young bands
Team up with other musicians and organize a “young stage” night.
It boosts the crowd, reduces pressure, and makes your event more appealing to the venue.
4. Activate your network – and build your audience
Tell your friends, classmates, and family. Create a Facebook event and use Instagram or TikTok to build excitement. A poster and a short video teaser go a long way.
5. Rehearse like it’s a stadium gig
Even if it’s “just” the community center, aim to sound and look your best.
Practice your full setlist, transitions, and what to say between songs.
Stage presence matters – even in a school gym.
6. Use the gig as a launchpad
Get someone to film or take photos. That footage becomes your portfolio.
You can use it to land more gigs, grow your fanbase, and build momentum.
